Things to Do in Basel This Spring: Outdoor Adventures & Family Fun

Updated: Mar 4

Spring is finally here in Basel and it’s the perfect time to shake off the winter blues and enjoy the outdoors. If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained or searching for the best family-friendly spring activities, you’re in the right place.

What are the best spring activities in Basel?

From picking fresh flowers in local fields and strolling beneath cherry blossoms in charming villages like Nuglar‑St. Pantaleon, to exploring the lush Merian Gärten, relaxing in peaceful parks like Lange Erlen, or visiting castle ruins, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season for all ages.

Hi, I’m Nikolett, a family photographer based in Basel. As an expat mom, it took me a while to discover the best family-friendly activities for each season here. Fast forward almost seven years, and many of these outings have become family traditions that we look forward to every spring.

I. Cherry Blossom Walks - Perfect for Families

Did you know that the region around Basel has beautiful cherry blossom trees that turn white in spring? Take a stroll, enjoy the sweet scent, and take some family photos in this magical place. Cherry trees typically blossom early to mid April, depending on local weather conditions and the specific variety of cherry tree. The peak bloom period can vary from year to year, so it's a good idea to keep an eye on bloom forecasts and local updates.

In the Basel area, there are several places where you can see cherry blossoms in bloom:

  1. Nuglar-St. Pantaleon: This area in Basel-Land is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms. The village of Nuglar-St. Pantaleon offers a picturesque setting to admire the blossoms against the backdrop of the Swiss countryside.

  2. Arlesheim: Every spring, the hills between Arlesheim and Gempen transform into a sea of delicate white blossoms, known locally as the “Cherry Land” (Kirschland). Walking or cycling through the blooming trees is a true highlight of the season.

  3. Liestal: While not known specifically for cherry blossoms, the town of Liestal and its surrounding areas have some cherry trees that bloom in spring. Taking a leisurely walk around the town or along the riverbanks may lead you to spots where you can find cherry blossoms.

II. Self-Picking Flowers Near Basel – A Spring Tradition for Kids

This is one of our annual family traditions, to self-pick flowers for Mother`s Day and my daughter absolutely loves it. I recommend heading to one of the many flower fields in Basel, where you can hand-select your favorite blooms. Whether it's vibrant tulips, fragrant daisies, or delicate daffodils, the joy of choosing your flowers is a delightful experience for the whole family. Just google: "Blumenfeld" and you can find the nearest one to you.

III. Spring Gardens in Basel - Family-Friendly Spots to Explore

If you’re looking for a quick weekday adventure, some of the local parks are perfect options to enjoy with the kids.

Merian Gärten

Merian Gärten in Basel is not just a garden, it's a botanical wonderland waiting to be explored! First of all, there are several smaller thematical areas with plenty of greenery. But Merian Gärten isn't just about pretty flowers (although there are plenty of those!). It's a place for families to bond over picnics, for kids to run wild in playgrounds and adore farm animals.

Kannenfeldplatz

One of the charming spots to enjoy early spring blooms in Basel is Kannenfeldplatz. This lively urban square is home to several early-blooming trees, including magnolias and decorative cherry trees, which create a splash of color even before the main flowering season begins. It’s a perfect place for a family stroll, a quick photo with the blooming trees, or simply to enjoy the first signs of spring in the city.

Lange Erlen

Lange Erlen Park in Basel is a peaceful place with beautiful lakes, trees, and even a free zoo! You can see lots of different animals there. It's a great spot for families because there are playgrounds for kids and space for picnics. They also have fun events sometimes, like concerts and nature walks.

IV. Weekend Hikes with Kids Around Basel

From April to May, the fields around Basel are bursting with wildflowers in full bloom. It’s the perfect time to take a Sunday family walk along one of the nearby trails, soak up the spring sunshine, and enjoy the colorful scenery of meadows.

One of the closest location to Basel is the Landschaftspark Wiese along the Wiese river offers large open fields and natural grasslands where you can enjoy peaceful springtime nature. The area’s unbuilt meadows and riverbanks are ideal for spotting early wildflowers and listening to birdsong on a sunny afternoon walk.

For a more scenic spring hike with abundant wild plants and flowers, the Blüemlisalp near Waldenburg is a standout. This extensive mown grassland and meadow landscape is known for its rich variety of wildflower species, butterflies and orchids.

V. Hidden Gems in Basel for Families - Castle Ruins

Family hiking near Castle Dorneck ruins in Basel-Landschaft

Exploring castle ruins around Basel is one of the most exciting springtime activities for families who love history, adventure, and the outdoors. The region is home to many fascinating medieval sites where kids can roam, imagine ancient battles, and enjoy wide-open spaces surrounded by nature.

A perfect example is Burgruine Pfeffingen, one of the largest and most impressive castle ruins in Basel‑Land, offering stunning views over the surrounding landscape. Another favourite is Castle Dorneck, and just a short drive away, the ruins of Schloss Birseck in Arlesheim can be reached through the beautiful Ermitage park.

VI. Explore Museums in Basel on rainy days

Basel is a cultural hub in Switzerland and this list couldn`t be complete without visiting museums. I know this is not outdoor, but we need a plan for rainy days too! For families with small kids, visiting museums can be a fun and educational experience. Here are some museums in Basel that are particularly well-suited for young kids:

  1. Naturhistorisches Museum Basel (Natural History Museum Basel): This museum is a great choice for kids who are curious about the natural world and it`s by far, my daughter’s favorite. With exhibits on dinosaurs, animals, and ecosystems, the Natural History Museum offers interactive displays and hands-on activities that are both engaging and educational for kids.

  2. Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel (Toy Museum Basel): Kids will love exploring the world of toys at this charming museum. With displays of vintage dolls, teddy bears, trains, and other toys from different eras, the Toy Museum offers a nostalgic trip down memory lane for parents and a fun experience for kids.

  3. Museum Jean Tinguely: The Tinguely Museum is filled with playful and kinetic sculptures created by Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. Kids will be fascinated by the moving parts and whimsical designs of Tinguely's artworks, and they can even interact with some of the exhibits to see them come to life.
