Some places feel almost too beautiful to be real.
Lauterbrunnen Valley, known for its waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, and iconic Swiss Alps scenery, is one of the most breathtaking locations in Switzerland for a family photoshoot.
Above the valley, the peaceful village of Wengen offers a quieter and more intimate perspective of the Jungfrau region.
This beautiful expat family, originally from the UK and Mexico, has been living in Basel. They wanted to create meaningful memories from their life here, something their
children can return to later and remember what it felt like to live in Switzerland.
Choosing a family photoshoot in Lauterbrunnen and Wengen allowed them to capture that feeling in one of the most iconic places in Switzerland.
A little overview of this blog
The Experience of a Lauterbrunnen Family Photoshoot
We started early in the morning, long before the valley filled with visitors. If you are planning a Lauterbrunnen photoshoot, timing is one of the most important decisions.
By mid morning, the most popular photo spots in Lauterbrunnen become busy, and it becomes much harder to create natural and intimate images.
What made this session even more special was the choice of locations. We decided to combine two settings, starting in Lauterbrunnen and continuing in Wengen, where we had a breathtaking view overlooking the entire valley.
We photographed on private farmland that I arranged in advance. Many people visiting Lauterbrunnen do not realize that the beautiful green meadows are privately owned. Even when they are not fenced, they are not public land. These fields are used by local farmers to grow grass for their cows, and stepping into them without permission can cause damage.
Unfortunately, this has become a growing issue in the Jungfrau region.
For this session, I worked together with Lisi Wedding Proposal to coordinate access to a private meadow. This allowed us to create a peaceful and exclusive Lauterbrunnen photoshoot experience while respecting the land and the local community.
Running my business in a sustainable and respectful way is very important to me. When you book a session with me, all of this is already taken care of. There is nothing extra you need to arrange or pay for. It is simply part of creating a responsible and high quality experience.
Best Time for a Lauterbrunnen Photoshoot
If you are wondering about the best time for a Lauterbrunnen family photoshoot, the answer depends on both light and crowds.
We chose early morning because it offers the most peaceful atmosphere. The light is soft, the valley is quiet, and the experience feels calm and personal. As the day goes on, Lauterbrunnen becomes one of the busiest places in Switzerland, especially in summer.
Seasonal Tips
Mid May to June: One of my favorite times for summer sessions. The snow has mostly melted, the landscape is fresh and green, and it is not too busy yet.
High Summer, July to August: Still beautiful, but morning sessions are strongly recommended due to heat and crowds.
Autumn: Perfect for golden tones and softer light, especially for late afternoon sessions.
Winter: Lauterbrunnen transforms into a magical snowy wonderland, making it an incredible location for winter photoshoots as well.
When planning the best time for a photoshoot in Switzerland, weather is always an important factor to consider. Mountain weather can change quickly, and clouds can create a completely different atmosphere. Sometimes a slightly cloudy morning creates the most dramatic and beautiful images, while clear days offer those iconic panoramic views.
My goal is always to choose the timing and conditions that allow us to have the most relaxed and memorable experience, not just beautiful photos.
A Sustainable Approach to Photoshoots in Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen is one of the most photographed places in Switzerland, but it is also a working landscape. The meadows are not just beautiful backgrounds. They are essential for local farmers. Respecting this is incredibly important for preserving the region.
This is why I always coordinate with local farmers and arrange access properly for every Lauterbrunnen photoshoot session. There are several private locations across Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald that can be used, but they require local knowledge and connections.
By organizing everything in advance, I ensure that your photoshoot is not only beautiful, but also respectful and sustainable.

Alternative Locations Near Lauterbrunnen
If you are looking for a slightly different experience, there are also incredible locations above Lauterbrunnen in the Jungfrau region.
Männlichen offers wide panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The open landscape and accessible walking paths make it a great choice for families with children who can walk a bit.
Schynige Platte is another stunning option, known for its alpine meadows and peaceful atmosphere. It feels more remote and offers breathtaking views over the region.
These higher altitude locations are perfect if you want fewer crowds and a more expansive mountain setting. They are especially suited for adventurous families, couples, or sessions where you want a true Swiss Alps hiking atmosphere.
What to Wear for Your Lauterbrunnen Photoshoot

Choosing outfits for a Swiss Alps family photoshoot does not need to be complicated. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and confident, because comfort allows genuine moments to happen naturally.
I always recommend soft, neutral tones and colours inspired by nature: creams, beige, earthy tones, soft blues, and warm colours that complement the mountain landscape. Flowing dresses, textured fabrics, and simple layers photograph the best and add movement to your images.
Layers are always a good idea. Even during summer, temperatures can be cooler at higher altitudes, especially in the morning hours. Bringing a beautiful cardigan, jacket, or sweater allows you to stay comfortable while still looking stylish.
I recommend avoiding large logos, bright neon colours, or very busy patterns, as they can distract from the most important part of the photograph: you and your connection as a family.
I also provide a detailed style guide before every session to help you prepare outfits that feel authentic to your family while matching the natural beauty of Switzerland.
Tips for Your Lauterbrunnen Family Photoshoot
Planning a family photoshoot in Lauterbrunnen becomes much easier when you focus on a few key elements.
Starting early or late is one of the most important decisions you can make. It allows you to enjoy the location without crowds and creates a much more relaxed experience. Comfort is also essential, especially for children, as it helps everyone stay present and enjoy the moment.
Travel logistics are another important factor. Reaching Wengen involves trains which adds to the experience but requires some planning. I guide you through all of this so your session feels effortless.
If you are considering a photoshoot here, these tips will help you make the most of it:
Bring layers because mountain weather can change quickly
Pack light snacks and water for the kids
Let children explore because the best moments happen naturally
Do not rush because this is about connection, not perfection
FAQ About Lauterbrunnen Family Photoshoots

Is Lauterbrunnen a good location for a family photoshoot?
Yes, absolutely. The entire Jungfrau region is an incredible location for a family photoshoot, but it is also one of the most popular areas in Switzerland, so crowds are to be expected. This is why thoughtful planning and coordination are essential. We either choose quieter hiking routes or arrange access to private farmland, which I carefully coordinate with local farmers to ensure a peaceful and respectful experience.
Do we need permission for a Lauterbrunnen photoshoot?
There are a few well known photo spots that are open to the public, but these tend to get very crowded and often involve waiting in line, making them suitable for just a quick photo rather than a full session.
The meadows in Lauterbrunnen (Wengen, Grindelwald, Mürren and the whole region) are privately owned farmland. I arrange access in advance by coordinating with local farmers, so your photoshoot is fully respectful and stress free.
When is the best time for a Lauterbrunnen photoshoot?
Early morning is the best time to avoid crowds and enjoy soft, natural light. Evening can also be beautiful, but it is usually busier in the valley.
Is Lauterbrunnen suitable for photoshoots with children?
Yes, Lauterbrunnen is very family friendly. I choose locations that are easy to access and adapt the session to your family’s need
Can we combine Lauterbrunnen and Wengen in one photoshoot?
Yes, it is possible to include both locations depending on timing and travel logistics. This allows for a variety of landscapes within one session.
Are there alternatives to Lauterbrunnen for photoshoots?
Yes, nearby locations like Männlichen and Schynige Platte offer a different experience with fewer crowds and wide alpine views. They are perfect for more adventurous sessions
How much does a family photoshoot in Switzerland cost?
I offer a two-step pricing approach to give you flexibility and allow you to choose only the images that truly speak to you.
The first step is the session fee, which covers the photoshoot itself, all the planning beforehand, my expertise and location recommendations, as well as travel costs. My sessions are not limited by a strict time frame, we take the time we need to create a relaxed experience and make sure every family receives the same level of care, attention, and beautiful photographs, regardless of the circumstances on the day.
A few weeks after your session, you will receive a complete gallery of all the edited images. From there, you can take your time choosing the photographs you love most and would like to keep forever. I offer three different photo collections to make this process simple and flexible: 30 images, 50 images, or the full gallery collection.

Meet your photographer
Hi, I’m Nikolett, a family photographer based near Basel, capturing stories all across Switzerland, from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Zermatt, and beyond.

I’m an expat who has been living in Switzerland for over seven years. When I first moved here, I bought my very first camera to document our hikes with my husband and the breathtaking nature around us. We spent countless weekends exploring wild, quiet trails far from the crowds, always drawn to the sense of freedom the mountains gave us.
Mountains have always been part of my story. My dad loved Austria, and many of my childhood memories were created during family trips there. I still smile when I look back at those charming ‘90s family photographs with their alpine backdrops, they were simple, nostalgic, and filled with warmth.
Those images are one of my biggest sources of inspiration today. I love creating photographs that capture not only how a place looks, but how it feels: the sense of adventure, the connection between family members, and those little moments that become treasured memories for years to come.
