Imagine trusting a photographer from 8,000 km away and booking her for a family photoshoot in Lucerne, to show you the best views of Switzerland while documenting your family travels.
This is exactly what happened with this family. They traveled all the way from Miami, USA to Switzerland, hired me as their local family photographer, and trusted my advice on the perfect location and timing.
In return, I created a mountain photoshoot experience where it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves, no waiting in long lines for photos, just a true Alpine experience where we could explore freely.
A little overview of this blog
Why Choose Mt. Pilatus for a Family Photoshoot

When families dream about a family photoshoot in Switzerland, they often imagine dramatic mountain views, green alpine meadows, and unforgettable views. Mt. Pilatus, just outside Lucerne, is one of my favourite locations in Central Switzerland for creating this kind of experience because it combines breathtaking scenery with easy accessibility.
As a switzerland based photographer, I love Mt. Pilatus because it offers so much variety in one location. Within a short walk, we can move from panoramic mountain views overlooking Lake Lucerne to peaceful alpin wildflower meadows, and beautiful mountain landscapes. This means your gallery feels like a complete Swiss Alps adventure rather than just a collection of photos from one viewpoint.
One of the things that makes Mt. Pilatus special is that it feels adventurous while still being accessible for families. You don’t need to be an experienced hiker or spend hours climbing to reach incredible views. The gondola ride takes us high into the mountains, and from there we can explore at a relaxed pace, allowing children to run, play, and discover their surroundings naturally.
For me, Swiss Alps photography is not about creating a perfect postcard image, it’s about capturing the feeling of being there. The little hands holding yours while walking through a meadow and the excitement of children seeing the mountains for the first.
Mt. Pilatus gives us the perfect setting for a meaningful family experience: a place where we can slow down, explore freely, and create memories that bring you back to your Swiss adventure every time you look at your photographs.
The Experience: What a Session Feels Like
My mountain photoshoot sessions aren`t about standing in one place and smiling at the camera. My goal is to create an experience where your family can truly be yourselves: exploring, playing, laughing, and enjoying this special moment together in the Swiss Alps.
When I photograph families, I guide you through natural interactions that allow genuine emotions to unfold. A little adventure, a lot of movement, and plenty of moments that feel like you.
At Mt. Pilatus, children have the freedom to experience the mountains in their own way: climbing over rocks, running through alpine meadows, exploring little paths, holding their parents’ hands as they take in the views, or simply stopping for a moment to admire the incredible landscape around them. These natural moments of curiosity and connection are often the ones that create the most meaningful photographs.
I believe the best images come from real connection. The way your child looks at you, the laughter between siblings, the hugs that happen naturally, and those quiet moments when you pause together to appreciate the views,
This is what makes mountain photoshoots in Switzerland so special to me. It’s not just about creating beautiful images of your family in an amazing location, it’s about preserving the feeling of that day. Years from now, I want your photographs to bring you back to the adventure, the emotions, and the memories you created together in Switzerland.
Best Time for a Photoshoot on Mt. Pilatus
One of the most common questions I receive from families planning their family photoshoot in Lucerne is: “When is the best time to visit Mt. Pilatus for photos?”
For me, the best time is in the morning. The mountain is usually quieter, there are no queues, and the whole experience feels much more relaxed from the start. This makes a morning session ideal for families who want to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed.
Summer and autumn both offer something unique. During summer, the alpine meadows are green, the days are long so the light is also stronger.
In autumn, the mountains become quieter, the colours become warmer, and the atmosphere feels more intimate and peaceful.
When planning the best time for a photoshoot in Switzerland, weather is always an important factor to consider. Mountain weather can change quickly, and clouds can create a completely different atmosphere. Sometimes a slightly cloudy morning creates the most dramatic and beautiful images, while clear days offer those iconic panoramic views.
My goal is always to choose the timing and conditions that allow us to have the most relaxed and memorable experience, not just beautiful photos.
How to Get There (Lucerne to Mt. Pilatus)
One of the reasons I love Mt. Pilatus for family sessions is that you can experience the Swiss Alps without a long or difficult hike. It offers breathtaking mountain views while still being accessible for families travelling with children.
The easiest way to reach Mt. Pilatus is from Lucerne via Kriens. From Lucerne, you can take a short bus ride to Kriens, where you continue with the gondola and cable car journey up the mountain. The entire journey becomes part of the adventure, and children usually love the experience of travelling higher and higher into the Alps.
For a photoshoot, we usually plan the timing carefully to avoid crowds and make the most of the beautiful mountain light. I provide all the details before your session, including where to meet, what time to arrive, and how to prepare, so you can simply enjoy the experience without worrying about logistics.
What to Wear for a Mountain Photoshoot

Choosing outfits for a Swiss Alps family photoshoot does not need to be complicated. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and confident, because comfort allows genuine moments to happen naturally.
I always recommend soft, neutral tones and colours inspired by nature: creams, beige, earthy tones, soft blues, and warm colours that complement the mountain landscape. Flowing dresses, textured fabrics, and simple layers photograph the best and add movement to your images.
Since Mt. Pilatus is a mountain location, layers are always a good idea. Even during summer, temperatures can be cooler at higher altitudes, especially in the morning hours. Bringing a beautiful cardigan, jacket, or sweater allows you to stay comfortable while still looking stylish.
I recommend avoiding large logos, bright neon colours, or very busy patterns, as they can distract from the most important part of the photograph: you and your connection as a family.
I also provide a detailed style guide before every session to help you prepare outfits that feel authentic to your family while matching the natural beauty of Switzerland.
Tips for Families with Kids During a Mountain Photoshoot
The location I love to use at Mt. Pilatus is especially suited for families with slightly older children (around 5+), as there are some gentle inclines and uneven mountain paths to navigate. While it is not a challenging hike, little legs should be comfortable walking short distances and exploring the surroundings.
Unfortunately, the mountain paths are not stroller-friendly, so I usually recommend this location for families who can comfortably walk without a stroller. For younger children, a baby carrier can be a great alternative.
The best thing you can do is allow your children to explore. Let them run through the grass, look for little treasures in nature, and enjoy the adventure. These natural moments often create the most meaningful memories.
I always recommend bringing some snacks and water, especially for younger children. A small break can completely change the mood and help everyone relax.

How much does a family photoshoot in Switzerland cost?
I offer a two-step pricing approach to give you flexibility and allow you to choose only the images that truly speak to you.
The first step is the session fee, which covers the photoshoot itself, all the planning beforehand, my expertise and location recommendations, as well as travel costs. My sessions are not limited by a strict time frame, we take the time we need to create a relaxed experience and make sure every family receives the same level of care, attention, and beautiful photographs, regardless of the circumstances on the day.
A few weeks after your session, you will receive a complete gallery of all the edited images. From there, you can take your time choosing the photographs you love most and would like to keep forever. I offer three different photo collections to make this process simple and flexible: 30 images, 50 images, or the full gallery collection.

Meet your photographer
Hi, I’m Nikolett, a family photographer based near Basel, capturing stories all across Switzerland, from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Zermatt, and beyond.

I’m an expat who has been living in Switzerland for over seven years. When I first moved here, I bought my very first camera to document our hikes with my husband and the breathtaking nature around us. We spent countless weekends exploring wild, quiet trails far from the crowds, always drawn to the sense of freedom the mountains gave us.
Mountains have always been part of my story. My dad loved Austria, and many of my childhood memories were created during family trips there. I still smile when I look back at those charming ‘90s family photographs with their alpine backdrops, they were simple, nostalgic, and filled with warmth.
Those images are one of my biggest sources of inspiration today. I love creating photographs that capture not only how a place looks, but how it feels: the sense of adventure, the connection between family members, and those little moments that become treasured memories for years to come.
