They could throw little rocks into the lake, dip their feet in the water, and climb on the small hills and rocks around the shoreline. These simple moments of play brought so much joy and made the session feel relaxed and natural.

Morning vs Evening
Early morning, first gondola: Best for summer sessions to avoid crowds and harsh midday light. Peaceful, soft, and ideal for families with small children.
Afternoon or evening, about 2 hours before the last gondola: Beautiful for softer light, but in summer the light can still be quite strong unless it is a cloudy day. This timing works especially well for autumn sessions or overcast weather.
Seasonal Tips
Mid May to June: One of my favorite times for summer sessions. The snow has mostly melted, the landscape is fresh and green, and it is not too busy yet.
High Summer, July to August: Still beautiful, but morning sessions are strongly recommended due to heat and crowds.
Autumn: Perfect for golden tones and softer light, especially for late afternoon sessions.
Winter: Engelberg transforms into a magical snowy wonderland, making it an incredible location for winter photoshoots as well.
When planning the best time for a photoshoot in Switzerland, weather is always an important factor to consider. How to Get to Engelberg & Trübsee
One of the reasons Engelberg is such a wonderful location for family photoshoots is that it is surprisingly easy to reach, even though it feels like a true alpine escape.
Getting to Engelberg
Engelberg is located in central Switzerland and is easy to reach from Basel, Lucerne, and other nearby cities.
By car: From Basel, the drive usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. There is parking available in Engelberg near the valley station.
By train:Engelberg is also accessible by train, usually with a connection in Lucerne. From Engelberg train station, it is a short walk or taxi ride to the Titlis valley station.
Getting to Trübsee
From Engelberg, you take the Titlis Xpress gondola up to Trübsee. The ride itself is part of the experience, with beautiful mountain views along the way.
Once you arrive at the gondola station, the lake is only about a 5-minute walk away. The path is easy and stroller-friendly, which makes it especially convenient for families with babies or small children.
For families with older children or couples, there is also the option to hike down from Trübsee instead of taking the gondola back down. This gives us more flexibility and allows us to enjoy the soft evening light without being tied to the gondola schedule.
What to Wear for a Mountain Photoshoot
Choosing outfits for a Swiss Alps family photoshoot does not need to be complicated. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and confident, because comfort allows genuine moments to happen naturally.
I always recommend soft, neutral tones and colours inspired by nature: creams, beige, earthy tones, soft blues, and warm colours that complement the mountain landscape. Flowing dresses, textured fabrics, and simple layers photograph the best and add movement to your images.
Since Trübsee is a mountain location, layers are always a good idea. Even during summer, temperatures can be cooler at higher altitudes, especially in the morning hours. Bringing a beautiful cardigan, jacket, or sweater allows you to stay comfortable while still looking stylish.
I recommend avoiding large logos, bright neon colours, or very busy patterns, as they can distract from the most important part of the photograph: you and your connection as a family.

The descent to Engelberg takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the route and pace, which means we are not tied to the gondola schedule and can enjoy the soft evening light in summer when daylight lasts until around 9 pm.

A few weeks after your session, you will receive a complete gallery of all the edited images. From there, you can take your time choosing the photographs you love most and would like to keep forever.
